The Lab was founded by Israel Horovitz in 1975, as a weekly workshop for established playwrights. An ever-changing group of well-known playwrights, current Lab membership includes Horovitz, Neena Beber, Richard Vetere, Sarah Ruhl, Tanya Barfield, Peter Parnell, Matthew Weiss, James Lapine, Michael Hollinger, Nicole Burdette, Richard Wesley, Ellen Melaver, Seth Zvi Rosenfeld, Daniel Reitz, and Jonathan Marc Sherman.
The mission of The New York Playwrights Lab is to ensure that established playwrights continue writing for the theatre. Lab playwright-members begin a new play on the same day in Autumn. Throughout the year, Lab members meet for weekly sessions during which 5-10 pages per week are read aloud from developing plays, and critiqued by Lab members.
